Elliott Burr '08 - On His Way to Wall Street

Elliott Burr Class of 2008
  • CLASS: 2008
  • MAJOR: Business Administration & Economics
  • INTERNSHIPS: Equity Research Analyst, Oppenheimer & Co., Inc; Investment Intern, Citi Smith Barney; Summer Intern,Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

Elliott Burr dreams of working on Wall Street, but his success won’t just come from making the big bucks. He says it is important to really love what he is doing.

"When I begin to watch the clock more than do actual work, I know I’ll have to think of something else to do," he said.

To get a head start in the business world, Burr completed three internships before graduation. He interned with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a corporate law firm; Citi Smith Barney, an investment and wealth management firm; and Oppenheimer & Co., Inc., a Wall Street financial services firm.

And, he wasn't just getting coffee and donuts for the senior staff.

"At Oppenheimer, I was an equity research analyst," said Burr. "I worked closely with a senior analyst to assess various stocks and stamp them with a buy, sell, or hold rating, and publish reports summarizing our findings."

"The research department doesn’t have that sexy, fast-paced, 'you’re fired!' aura to it like investment banking does, but a large part of our role was to provide a more rational evaluation and keep those types of people in check," he added.

Post-graduation Burr is looking into finance and consulting firms, but he's not set on any one direction yet.

"I'm not 100% sure [what I'll be doing], but it won't involve watching cartoons while eating Rice Krispies out of a salad bowl on Wednesday mornings."
