Cody Goulder '08 - Building the Stage for His Future
- CLASS: 2008
- MAJOR: Theatre and Communications Arts
- INTERNSHIP: Acting Apprentice, Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival
Cody Goulder's love of theatre really has no bounds; he acts, writes, directs and even builds sets. He has participated in 12 Whittier theatrical productions including Shakespeare, musicals, and contemporary theater. And, during the summers, Goulder participated in a professional apprenticeship with Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival 2007 and 2008.
As a summer apprentice he lived with a group of other actors and set builders, earned a stipend, and—most importantly—receive equity points towards the actor's union. Aside from attending all daily rehearsals as a cast member/understudy, he worked as scenic crew, doing set construction and related jobs.
"The most rewarding part was talking with and learning from all the professionals around me," he said.
While he plans to apply to graduate school next year, for now he will continue working in the theatre, writing plays, and submitting them to festivals all over the country.
He understands the competitive nature of the business and says he will gauge his future success by "how happy he is."
"I want to do theater with my life. I can't image doing anything else, but, I'm open to the possibilities. In the end, if I'm 20 years down the road and I'm teaching high school theater, that's OK," he said.
"I want people to learn and express themselves and, if I can help do that in some way, shape, or form, then it doesn't matter how much money I make or what kind of career I'll have."
