GUIDELINES FOR THE MAJOR

A minimum of 32 credits must be completed for a major in sociology, including:

  • Intro to Sociology, SOC 100 (3 credits)
  • Race, Class, Gender, SOC 200 (3 credits); pre-requisite of SOC 100 or SOC 287
  • Theory, SOC 302 (3 credits); pre-requisite of SOC 200 or instructor’s permission
  • Methods, SOC 310 or 311 (4 credits); pre-requisite of SOC 200
  • Statistics, SOC 314 (4 credits)
  • Senior Seminar, SOC 408 (3credits); pre-requisite of SOC 200, SOC 302, SOC 310 or 311 and senior standing
  • One course from SOC 370-389: Social Structures and Institutions (3 credits)
  • One course from SOC 340-359: Policy, Politics and Power
    (3 credits)

Electives. A minimum of six (6) credits, including any cross-listed course, any 200-level sociology course, or any 300-level sociology course.

Breadth outside the major. This requirement can be met by any one of the following:

  • a minor in any discipline;
  • a second major in any discipline; or
  • an additional 12 credits above 300-level in any discipline other than sociology.

Guidelines for a Minor in Sociology

A minor in sociology requires a minimum of 18 credits, including SOC 100, SOC 200, SOC 302, SOC 310 or 311 and a total of at least nine (9) credits above the 300-level.
