Helping Hands Day
Once a year on a Saturday, approximately 150 student, staff, and faculty volunteers rise early and meet on the College campus to recieve their assignments for Helping Hands Day, a program that sponsors daylong service projects within the community, coordinated by the Office of Residential Life. Partnering with local city agencies, senior centers, shelters, and other organizations in need, the Whittier teams head out into the field for a variety of activities, from gardening and painting and street cleanup, to reading to the elderly, working with the homeless, and organizing files or other administrative duties. Service assignments are primarily located within the City of Whittier, with a few projects taking place on the campus itself.
Concluding Helping Hands Day is a traditional barbeque and festival for all participants —a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the day, and further raise awareness for the volunteer program.
