OMEP 2012 Global Perspectives Seminar:
State of the World’s Children: Africa

EVERYONE WELCOME!
What is daily life like for young children in various
parts of Africa?
Internationally known child advocate, Barbara Kamara,
will present Children and Childhood in Liberia. Mrs.
Kamara is former Associate Commissioner in the
Department of Health and Human Services, where she was
responsible for the National Head Start Program. Today
she works closely with the Ministry of Education in
Liberia.
Grace Jepkemboi will present Children and Childhood in
Kenya: The Promise, the Challenge and the Way Forward.
Dr. Jepkemboi, from at University of Alabama,
Birmingham, continues her hands-on work in her native
Kenya, where she directs a non-profit organization
working to eliminate HIV/AIDS.
Clair Null, Emory University’s the Hubert Department of
Global Health, will describe an innovative approach to
latrine training in developing countries with the goal
of overall improvements in sanitation and hygiene
throughout communities. Her presentation is entitled.
One Size Doesn't Fit All: Adapting Sanitation in
Resource Poor Settings to Young Children's Needs.
These presentations relate to OMEP’s new initiative with
UNICEF called WASH from the START, focusing on water,
sanitation, and hygiene in early childhood settings. Dr.
Judith T. Wagner, Whittier College, President of OMEP-USA
and Deputy President of World OMEP, will moderate this
session.

OMEP 2012 Poster Session and Conversation Hour:
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
(CRC)

EVERYONE WELCOME!
This session includes peer-reviewed posters featuring
research, curriculum highlights, teaching strategies,
policy issues, and advocacy, all relating to children’s
rights to survival, development, participation, and
protection. In addition, posters will feature World OMEP
projects including the new initiative with UNICEF, WASH
from the START, emphasizing water, sanitation, and
hygiene in early childhood settings. The session will
also include opportunities for conversations with
international attendees and presenters at the Global
Perspectives Seminar. Chair: Dr. Kay Emfinger,
University of Alabama, Burmingham.
