Bernard C. Alex, Sr. is currently the Chief of the Department of Campus Safety here at Whittier College. Chief Alex also serves as the Chairman of the Safety Committee and Adjunct Faculty Member in the Kinesiology and Leisure Science Department.  He began his career over two decades ago with the University of Southern California’s Department of Public Safety. After leaving U.S.C., he was the Chief of Security for the Culver City Unified School District.

 

He was hired by the University of Southern California as a Student Counselor in 1978. In 1980, he accepted a full-time position with Parking Operations before joining Public Safety in 1981. During the next 17 years, Chief Alex held such positions as Community Service Officer, Communications Operator, Public Safety Officer I, Field Training Officer, Emergency Medical Technician and Background Investigator. As a Senior Officer, Chief Alex worked as the Acting Watch Commander and Personnel Coordinator. In his assignment as Personnel Coordinator, he was responsible for the hiring process for all incoming employees, which included oversight of the recruitment, interview process, medical and psychological examinations.

 

Chief Alex holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University @Dominquez Hills and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Southern California. In addition, he is a graduate of the following executive programs: FBI’s Southwest Command College, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Leadership Institute Class #3, California State University @ Los Angeles Law Enforcement Leadership Program, University of Southern California’s Delinquency Control Institute and Management Development Programs, International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators Executive Development Training Institute, National Center For Missing and Exploited Children Chief Executive Seminar, California College and University Police Chief’s Association P.O.S.T. Executive Workshop, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Leadership and Executive Development Training,

 

Chief Alex holds a State of California Clear Teaching Credential and has taught classes for such entities as:  Louisiana State University’s Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education Unit, Rio Hondo Administration of Justice Center, Downey Adult School, La Puente Valley Regional Occupational Center, and is currently a Staff Instructor for The National Crime Prevention Council. He is a Weapons of Mass Destruction General Instructor as recognized by the United States Department of Homeland Security, and has completed such courses as Incident Command, Enhanced Incident Management Unified Command, Campus Public Safety Officer Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction T-T-T, Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings, and Incident Command T-T-T.

 

Chief Alex serves as Vice President on the Board of Directors at Avalon Carver Community Center, a grass roots organization in South Los Angeles. In addition, he is a member of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, International Association for Chief’s of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, California Colleges and University Police Chiefs Association and the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.

 

Chief Alex enjoys spending time with his wife Lumina and children in his spare time.
