Assistant Professor Tenure Track Position in Special Education
Department of Education & Child Development
Located 20 miles southeast of metropolitan Los Angeles, Whittier College is a nationally recognized, selective, independent liberal arts college with approximately 1600 undergraduate students, and 150 graduate students of whom 45% is racially/ethnically diverse. Although non-sectarian since the 1930's, the College was founded by the Society of Friends in 1887, and it continues to value its Quaker heritage. With a full-time faculty of 100, the student-faculty ratio is 13:1.
The Department of Education and Child Development has a tradition of preparing highly qualified elementary, secondary, and special education teachers. Offerings include undergraduate studies in child development, and graduate studies in elementary, secondary, and special education, including several credential programs and Master of Arts degree program.
We are seeking a teacher-scholar committed to innovative teacher education in a student-centered liberal arts college. Because we serve a student body and larger community that is diverse in many ways, we are serious about seeking qualified candidates who have a strong, demonstrated commitment to teaching and teacher education centered around constructivist and reflective pedagogy, to teaching college students of diverse backgrounds, and to preparing future teachers to work effectively with diverse students, parents, and communities.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred; will consider ABDs who have extensive experience in schools and teaching.
- Academic preparation in Special Education, and in particular programs providing instruction and related services under the Mild/Moderate Authorization. Experience and preparation with Moderate/Severe desirable.
- Familiarity with California Commission on Teacher Credentialing standards in Special Education, willingness to design new programs, and ability to write documents to be submitted for state accreditation.
- Credential and successful teaching experience in special education programs in culturally/linguistically diverse public schools; and ability to coordinate special education programs.
- Evidence of experience and commitment to teaching college students of diverse backgrounds, and to preparing teachers for diverse student populations.
Experience with on-line teaching desirable.

Mellon Postdoctoral 2 year position
The Whittier College Department of English Language and Literature is offering a 2-year Mellon postdoctoral position with a 2-2 load and possible conversion after two years to tenure track (with a 3-3 load). The primary emphases will be on Creative Writing, especially fiction, and Chicano/Chicana literature, with a wide range of possible additional teaching interests including Creative Nonfiction, California Literature and/or Multi-Ethnic Literature. The Department seeks candidates prepared to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses. Participation expected in first-year writing and college-wide interdisciplinary and team-taught programs, especially as a participant in a new Center for Collaborations with the Arts.
Applicants must have received the PhD no earlier than July 1, 2009 and no later than June 30, 2012. Mellon Fellows may not hold any other appointment during the period of the fellowship.
