Spiritual Associations

A student receives ashes as part of an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service, coordinated by the Newman Club. With its roots as a Quaker college, Whittier today offers students of all faiths the opportunity to bond with others who share their religious conviction, as well as the chance to explore and debate beliefs, the history and sometimes-politicization of religious sects, and the place of religion in modern society, and in particular, on a college campus.

Take the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, for example, formed in 2004. Given Whittier’s commitment to connecting ideas and pursuits across boundaries, this amalgam of faith and athletics forms an interesting synthesis of both endeavors. Both the Jewish Student Union and the Catholic Newman Club actively organize service and social events on campus throughout the year—with special attention to religious holidays—as does the Whittier College Christian Fellowship, encouraging spiritual growth through prayer and worship. Events coordinated through these student organizations include guest lectures, religious services, holiday celebrations, and open dialogue sessions.
