Room Draw & Campus Housing Eligibility
Room Draw for the 2009- 2010 academic year will take place on April 15, 2009. Students must bring a Whittier College ID to participate, and have submitted the Residential Living Licensing Agreement by the required deadline. Room Draw is based on a lottery number system, with numbers randomly assigned according to both a student's class year and number of course credits completed or in process. A limited number of single rooms are available, so students are encouraged to find a roommate prior to this process; students who do not will be assigned a roommate by the Residential Life staff. Confirmation of housing will be sent to each resident upon completion of the Room Draw process. Room Draw will take place in Villolobas Hall and students should keep in mind lottery numbers will be posted by class year status based on credits, and not years attended.
Eligibility for campus housing
All first-year, sophomore, and junior students are required to live in Whittier College housing unless he or she meets one or more of the following criteria:
- The student resides at his/her legal residence, and is able to provide a copy of a current utility bill with the parent or guardian's name and the address of the residence in which the student will be residing, within a 25 mile radius of the college, or
- The student is or will be 22 years of age on or before the first day of fall 2008 classes.
- The student is married.
- The student has earned 90 credit hours at the end of the previous semesters.
Seniors
Students with senior class standing
and other students not required to live on campus who choose not to participate in Room Draw and then change their mind, must submit a Housing Request Form. They will be then be assigned housing from remaining available rooms during the summer.
Graduate Students
Students enrolled in the graduate program in education are not eligible for Room Draw but can submit a Housing Request Form. The Office of Residential Life does provide assistance to eligible students seeking off-campus housing.
Students with Disabilities
Students who have special needs for housing must contact the Office of Disability Services prior to Room Draw, in order to ensure appropriate placement in campus residences.
Study Abroad Students
Students planning to attend exchange programs in the fall should make plans to live on campus during January interim and/or the spring semester by filling out a Housing Request Form prior to going abroad. Please note that if you plan to study abroad we cannot reserve a room for you during Room Draw, yet every effort will be made to accommodate your preferences upon your return from studying abroad.
If, when Room Draw occurs, you are uncertain whether or not you will be taking a semester abroad, we advise you to participate in Room Draw. Your room will not be held for you if you are not enrolled in fall semester classes at the College. If you select a room and then later commit to an international program, please immediately notify the Office of Residential Life, so the room can be reassigned. If you wish to be assigned to a single room when you return from studying abroad, you may sign up on the Single Room Wait List. For more information, please contact the Office of Residential Life, 562.907.4223.
The License Agreement
All students who plan to live on campus and participate in Room Draw must submit to the Office of Residential Life a signed copy of the Residence Living License Agreement, prior to Room Draw. In signing this document, a student is legally committing to reside in a college-operated residence for the entire academic year (both the fall and spring semesters). Students are cautioned to read carefully before signing; this agreement is a binding contract between the student and the College. If a student chooses to move off campus without the consent of Residential Life, he or she will be in violation of the contract and still subject to charges for room and board.
