Student Conduct Policy
Whittier College is a community of scholars devoted to higher obligation, both to themselves and to each other, to foster an atmosphere of mutual learning. Members of the community—faculty, staff, and students—have a respect and high regard for life and property of the College. It is expected that all members of the community will conduct themselves as responsible citizens and will comply with all regulations contained in the Whittier College Catalog, the Student Handbook, Residential Life Policies, and other College publications and notices. Students are also expected to abide by all local, state, and federal laws.
Students participating in official Whittier College functions off-campus, including but not limited to field trips, social programming and study abroad programs, are held to the same standards of conduct as all Whittier College students on campus. As such, students will be held responsible for damage to property and other conduct violations. Adjudication of such cases will take place once the student returns to campus. In the event that a student's behavior poses a health or safety risk to that student or others, a faculty or staff member may make the decision to terminate that student's participation in the activity immediately and make arrangements for the student to return to campus.
It is assumed that these high standards will be self-enforced and that in the event that they are not, the College may take action to protect the interests of the community. The College reserves the right to suspend or expel any student whose conduct on or off campus is unbecoming to a Whittier College student or discredits the institution.
More can be found on the Student Conduct Policy, including definitions of misconduct and disciplinary procedures, within the 2007-2008 Whittier College Student Handbook (pp. 30-41).
