Requirements for the Major in Sociology

To complete the major in Sociology, a student must complete a minimum of 33 credits, which include the following:

Two 200-level Sociology courses (6 credits)
The Sociological Imagination, SOC 300 (3 credits); pre-requisite of two 200-level Sociology courses
Theory, SOC 302 (4 credits); pre-requisite SOC 300 or instructor’s permission
Methods, SOC 310 or 311 (4 credits); pre-requisite SOC 300
Statistics, SOC 214 (4 credits)
Senior Seminar A, SOC 407 (3 credits); pre-requisite SOC 300, SOC 302, SOC 310 or 311 and senior standing
Senior Seminar B, SOC 408 (3 credits); pre-requisite Soc 407
One course from SOC 340-359: Policy, Politics and Power (3 credits)
One course from SOC 370-389: Social Structures and Institutions (3 credits)
Breadth Outside Major: This can be met by any one of the following: a minimum of nine (9) credits in relevant supporting courses; a minor in any discipline; a second major in any discipline.

Requirements for the Minor in Sociology

To complete the minor in Sociology, a student must complete a total of 18-19 credits, which include the following:

Two 200-level Sociology courses (6 credits)
The Sociological Imagination, SOC 300 (3 credits); pre-requisite of two 200-level Sociology courses
Either Theory, SOC 302 (4 credits); pre-requisite SOC 300 or instructor’s permission OR
Methods, SOC 310 or 311 (3-4 credits); pre-requisite SOC 300
Complete at least 6 credits in Sociology at the 300 level or above
