Whittier's ten local fraternities and sororities (better know as
societies) have been an integral part of Whittier's traditions since the
1920's, when the earliest societies were founded as literary groups. In
the 1930's a social component was added. Throughout the years, societies
have also focused on scholarship and community service.
There are five
female societies: Athenians, Ionians, Metaphonians, Palmers, and
Thalians; four male societies: Franklins, Lancers, Orthogonians, and
Penns; and one co-ed society: Sachsens.
Societies provide
many unique experiences by bringing together individuals from different
cultures, geographic regions, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Society
members also demonstrate leadership, dependability, and responsibility,
within their societies and through other campus organizations. Lifelong
relationships are often formed as membership in each society instills
loyalty and dedication to fellow sisters and brothers.
Societies also
contribute greatly to the Whittier College community. Many of Whittier's
traditional and popular events are sponsored, organized, and planned by
societies. Opportunities for employment and academic support are also
provided by society membership. Major landmarks on campus, such as the
chapel and the fountain, were donated by societies and society members.
The societies will
be represented at the Student Activities Fair during Orientation. Anyone
interested in becoming a society member should take advantage of these
opportunities to meet society members and officers. Additionally,
interested students are HIGHLY encouraged to attend all open houses and
rush during the fall.
Bids
are given out at the end of fall semester, with new member education
occurring during the January interim. To be eligible to join a society,
a student must have completed at least one semester at Whittier College
and have a 2.25 cumulative and semester GPA.
