Tasks and Duties
An auctioneer:

  • Inspects the goods and may estimate the value of the goods
  • plans the selling order of the goods and the lotting (the groups that the items will be sold in)
  • displays the goods to allow purchasers to view the items before the auction
  • may arrange insurance for the goods
  • may arrange the place and date of the auction
  • may arrange advertising and catalogues
  • gives information on the goods to buyers
  • calls for and repeats bids
  • looks for bidding signals
  • sells the goods to the highest bidder, subject to a reserve price
  • keeps a record of the sales
