An auctioneer:

- may arrange insurance for the goods

- may arrange advertising and catalogues
- gives information on the goods to buyers
- calls for and repeats bids
- looks for bidding signals
- sells the goods to the highest bidder, subject to a reserve price
- keeps a record of the sales
