Careers In The Environment
When considering careers in the environment, many people envision working to
preserve our ecosystem through advocacy and conservation work. Although many
options exist in those areas, in truth environmental professionals work for a
wide range of businesses and organizations, including real estate developers,
attorneys, architects, government agencies and conservation groups.
Environmental professionals work on the teams of most
industrial
and development
projects throughout the United States. They work with developers, energy
companies and other businesses as they build homes, offices, shopping complexes
and power plants; transport petroleum and natural gas; and construct facilities
to generate electricity. Their role is ensure development efforts meet
regulations and minimize environmental impact. In this role, environmental
professionals must consider issues related not only to the ecosystem, but also
to the law, business and marketing as well.
Advocacy groups - who work to preserve the environment and build public
awareness of issues surrounding development - employ experts who can argue their
case to government officials including regulators and legislators; the news
media; and the general public. These groups also have people to monitor the
state of the environment and research long-term effects of pollution,
development and population growth.
Government agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency offer
positions that range from developing and overseeing environmental regulations to
coordinating hazardous-waste cleanups. State, county and local governments
require environmental professionals as well.
