Online Resume (E-Resume)

Online resumes are created through pre-formatted online questionnaires provided by large resume databases. These online questionnaires get stored in the large databases for employers to look at. Some of the questions within the questionnaire regards to your work experience, educational background, and the type of work you are looking for. Best of all, it only takes half an hour to fill out the form! Before filling out an online questionnaire, you will be required to register your name and your password. Registration is both free and safe-protected!

Once you have registered online to one of the major resume databases, you would not only have access in creating your resume, but you can also create cover letters and receive helpful information on searching for a job. Many resume databases also include personal search agents that will immediately e-mail an opening to you when it becomes available.

Please visit some of the major resume databases, which include: Monstertrak, Headhunter, and the New Jersey Job Bank.

Resume through E-mail
Another form of database is your e-mail account. An e-mail account is your typical personal database. If you do not have an e-mail account, you can register for your free, personal e-mail account at one of the following web sites:
Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail.

Through your personal e-mail account, you can forward your resume and your cover letter as an attachment to your employers. This is one of the most efficient and effective ways for "selling your qualifications."

Four Components to An Effective Resume.

  • The first rule is not to make your potential employer fall asleep when reading your resume. Make sure you have no more than 65 characters on each line of your resume.

  • Secondly, CAPITALIZE on all your achievements to distinguish yourself from the "average Joe". Make sure that some of the words STICK OUT with capitalizations.

  • Thirdly, emphasize clearermessagesthroughuseofspaces (Thirdly, emphasize clearer messages through use of spaces)." Otherwise your employer will have a hard time reading "unclearermessageswithoutspaces (unclear messages without spaces)."

  • The final commandment, commas should be your substitute for any semicolons, colons, and hyphens."

The E-Resume in an Electronic Application

Electronic applications (or so-called "online job applications") offers an easy and the most efficient way of sending your resume to your employer. The e-resume, which is stored in your computer, can either be cut or copied, and then pasted onto the online job application.

Before you can cut/copy and paste your resume onto the electronic application, under "File Name," you will need to save your resume with a .txt at the end of your title and then under "Save as Type," convert Word Document to Plain text, Text Only, or ASCII file.

Once your document is saved under the following conditions, you may need to go back and make corrections on your resume, due to your file conversion.

In order to cut or copy your resume, highlight everything on your resume and then go to "Edit" on the top left menu of your resume.

Once this is done, get into the online application and paste your resume into the resume section of the online application. In order to paste your resume onto the application, click the mouse in the box where you would like the resume to be. Then go to "Edit" on the top right menu and select "Paste." Your resume should appear in the application.

If you could not paste your resume into the application, follow these instructions again.

Resume Attachments

Resume attachments are another way of sending your resume to your employer through the internet. Rather than cut/ copy, then pasting your resume onto an electronic job application, applicants tend to use their e-mail as their main source for sending out their resumes to their employers. Each e-mail database systems have their own 'unique' way of sending attachments. Follow their instructions in how to send out an attachment via e-mail.

The advantages of sending your attached resume through your e-mail, is the format of the resume. The way you would like your resume to look, would look the way you expect it to once it is sent as an attachment through your e-mail.

The disadvantages of sending your attached resume through your e-mail is two-fold:

  • Due to possible virus transmission through e-mails, employers may not accept your attached resumes.
  • Because there are many e-mail databases, a few of these e-mail database systems may not have the capabilities to process attachments via e-mail.
