SLC Groundbreaking 2015On May 14, a groundbreaking ceremony took place on the College’s upper quad lawn to mark the start of construction of the renovation of the College's new Science and Learning Center (SLC.)  Slated to reopen in the fall of 2016, the new SLC will have new laboratories, and classrooms to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and flexible learning environments, the new building will create transformative opportunities for the entire Whittier College campus.

The event included ceremonial “sledgehammering” from dignitaries such as the Fernando Dutra, Mayor of Whittier and members of the City Council, as well as Whittier College’s mascot, Johnny Poet, taking down a brick wall with a backhoe.

This project wouldn't be possible without the generous and ongoing support of Whittier alumni, parents, friends, and partner foundation. Likewise, the collaboration of faculty, staff, and College partners in designing a space to put "science on display" will further the College's aim to prepare leaders in the areas of STEM and allied sciences.
