Whittier Weekend 2015 a Smashing Success

2015 Whittier Weekend, Golden BrunchMore than 1,000 Poets including alumni, families, students, and friends of the College participated in the 2015 Whittier Weekend festivities between October 23 and 25.

The three-day celebration opened with the Golden Anniversary brunch in honor of the class of 1965 followed by President Sharon Herzberger's State of the College address. In her speech, President Herzberger noted many of the College's achievements including the $2.6M Title V Grant awarded by the Department of Education for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

2015 Whittier Weekend, Poet AwardsA cohort of standout Poets was recognized for their significant impact on the College and beyond at the Poet Awards and Dinner held at Wardman House on Friday night. These select members of Whittier’s more than 18,000 alumni body were recognized in four categories: Alumna/us Achievement, Outstanding Young Alumnus/a, Community Impact, and Service to the College. In addition, the College awarded the status of Honorary Alumna/us to two members of the Poet community. Read more about the awardees.

Parents had the opportunity to have “Coffee with the Deans” where they met and engaged in dialog with Dean of Student Life Joel Perez and Dean of Academic Affairs Darrin Good. In addition, parents joined their students and attended a class as part of the activities especially tailored for them.

Alumni had a wide variety of events to choose from as part of their homecoming weekend. From lacrosse alumni games, to Poet Travel information sessions; and from Science and Learning Center hard hat tours to society brunches, there was an event for every Poet.

2015 Whittier Weekend, Poet FestivalThe Homecoming Poet Festival, an event featuring live music, foodtruck, and two complimentary beer tents preceded the anticipated Homecoming football game where the Poets fell to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. 

The weekend's festivities culminated with the 44th Annual Tardeada, a celebration of Latin American culture and heritage, where Victor Griego '78 was inducted into the Alianza de los Amigos Hall of Fame.
