The Writing Program at Whittier College is seeking a Director of College Writing.
Whittier College is seeking an experienced writing specialist to establish a new Writing Center and direct the College Writing Program. The College Writing Program is an integral part of the liberal arts curriculum, which is designed to teach students how to communicate effectively at each successive level of their major discipline, as well as to general audiences outside their chosen fields, commonly referred to on campus as Writing Across the Curriculum. In our writing courses, students are trained to read and listen critically and to construct supportable written arguments, integrating knowledge from within their chosen disciplines, through recursive, collaborative processes.
The Director will work with the Dean of Academic Success and faculty to staff the College Writing Program, a foundation of the First-Year Experience Program. Each semester and throughout the summer, the Director will offer professional development training for students serving as tutors, and for faculty teaching all levels of college writing (first year, intermediate, writing intensive, major capstones). In turn, the Director is expected to teach a first-year writing course once each semester, as needed, in consultation with the academic deans.
The Director will work with the Center for Advising and Academic Success during the summer months to support the training and development of peer writing associates to complement current tutoring programs. Additionally, the Director will work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to establish clear assessment standards and protocols for the College Writing Program, its instructors, and Writing Across the Curriculum.
