The Los Angeles
area (the five-county metropolitan area composed of Los Angeles,
Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties) is the
eleventh-largest economy in the world, and the area has much to
offer. |

|
Los Angeles
County has the largest population of any county in the
nation, and a larger population than 42 states. Los
Angeles is the second largest city in the nation in terms
of population and one of the most ethnically diverse
cities in the world. Many industries in the area are
thriving. L.A. has the largest film industry in the world
and has defined popular culture. |
 |
The city
leads California’s cultural growth and has more museums per
capita than any other city in the nation. Every major auto
manufacturer has a design studio or presence in the city, and L.A.
is a world leader in the toy and apparel industries. L.A. is now
the largest international trade center in the United States. In
addition, biotechnology is one of the fastest growing industries
in the county.
Whittier’s students, faculty and staff take full advantage of
all that the area has to offer. If you are looking for something
to do, the options range from strolling in Old Town Pasadena to
taking in a professional theater production to rollerblading at
Venice Beach. Many of Whittier’s students perform internships in
the area, and for those who want to start their careers in L.A.,
opportunity abounds. Many professors incorporate the area into
their research interests and coursework. All first-year students
take part in the Exploring Los Angeles series, which includes
trips to museums and cultural events. And sociology professor
Les Howard teaches a workshop during the January Interim that
uses Los Angeles and Tijuana as settings for studying urban
spatial and social organization, with special attention to the
design and use of public space.
