Whittier Team Wins L.A.
Student Film Festival Award
On
Nov. 13, Campus MovieFest, billed as the "world’s largest
student film festival," held its Los Angeles Grand Finale at
the famed Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The event featured
the top 16 short movies made in one week from over 8,000
students at USC, UCLA, Pomona, and Whittier. Winner of the
Best Concept award for the short “When We Lost Chris” was
Whittier first-year student team Christopher Davis, Cassie
Duray-Bito, Ashley Delzell, Lilia Hole, Jeffrey DeBarr, Mark
Juaton, Allison Desfor, and Zack Knight.
Whittier College Choir Hosts Holiday Concert and Dinner
Nov. 30 - Dec. 2
in Memorial Chapel, the Department of Music presents its
holiday program, featuring dinner and a choir performance,
including selections sung by the Broadoaks Children's Choir.

Whittier College alumni Chester '40 and Olive McCloskey '44
have donated $3 million to Whittier College, in order to
enhance the existing chemistry program and establish a

Professor Awarded National Science
Foundation Grant
The National Science Foundation awarded Glenn Piner,
associate professor of physics, a multi-year grant
exceeding $150K to continue his study of a large survey
of blazars, the extremely active regions surrounding
massive black holes at the centers of distant galaxies.
Piner uses the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's
Very Long Baseline Array, a system of 10 interconnected
radio-telescope antennas spanning the United States, to
analyze these astronomical objects.

Irvine Fellow Discusses Influence of
Spanish in the U.S.
Mariano Zaro, the 2007-08
Irvine Fellow in Spanish at Whittier College,
participated in an expert roundtable on the impact of
the Spanish language on the United States in terms of
media and mundane usage, as well as quality of spoken

Sigma Delta Pi, the
National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, awarded
Whittier College with the prestigious
El Premio
Octavio Paz,
an honor recognizing chapters that maintain an
outstanding record of activity and service for three
consecutive years. Whittier’s Upsilon Pi was one of
eight collegiate chapters to receive the award this
year, out of more than 500 chapters nationwide; Doreen
O’Connor-Gomez, associate professor of Spanish and
Upsilon Pi advisor, accepted the award on behalf of the
College at the organization’s August convention in San
Diego.

Professor of Art Endi Poskovic was featured in

Bosna, the largest weekly tabloid magazine in Bosnia,
equivalent to America’s Newsweek. The three-page article

country, the United States, and how it all began in the
Socialist Federative Republic of Bosnia (then Yugoslavia).

Abe Wins APAICS Internship
Melanie
Abe ’09 has been selected as one of only nine students
nationwide for a summer internship with the Asian Pacific
American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). The
internship will provide Abe an opportunity to participate in
the federal government and in the public policy-making
process, as well as meet with colleagues at the
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the Congressional
Hispanic Caucus, which make up the Tri-caucus activities.

of student art. Stewart won $100 for her untitled wood

Math Major
Earns Prize
Whittier math major Jacquelyn Rische ’07 earned an award at
the MAA Undergraduate Poster Session held during the 2007
Joint Mathematical Meetings in New Orleans. Rische’s
project, “Algebraic Interleavers in Turbo Codes,” was among
the top-scoring presentations, and the result of her
collaboration with two fellow research partners from the
Applied Mathematical Sciences Summer Institute.

Artist-in-residence and guitarist Kevin Cooper recently
released night of four moons, his debut CD featuring

an in-flight entertainment video featuring a segment on
musical group HAPA --specifically their annual concert tour,

filmed entirely at Whittier College, and includes an
on-screen interview with Shannon Center Manager David
Palmer.

Red Hen Press Awards Tony Barnstone
Prize for Poetry Collection
Professor of English Language and Literature Tony Barnstone
has been awarded the Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award for best
poetry collection. The award was given by Red Hen Press, a
Southern California-based nonprofit publisher whose mission
is to support quality literature that may otherwise be
overlooked by larger commercial houses. Barnstone
bested about 500 entrants to win the prize for best
manuscript.

David Paddy Wins Professor of the Year
Award
Associate Professor of English
Language and Literature David Paddy has been honored as
California’s Professor of the Year by the Council for the
Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Paddy is one of
45 winners selected from 43 states, Guam, and the District
of Columbia. The award recognizes extraordinary dedication

"Nixon in China Series" Offers November Film Screening and
Discussion
To
commemorate the 35th anniversary of Whittier alumnus and
former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon's historic trip to
China, the College is planning a yearlong series of related
events. On November 27 at 7:00p.m. in the Shannon Center, the
College will screen Emmy-award winning documentary "History
Declassified: Nixon in China." On November 30, Chen Jian,
chief researcher for the film, will discuss his work. For tickets,

Whittier College Choir Hosts Holiday Concert and Dinner
The
traditional Madrigal Feaste will take a holiday this year,
as the Department of Music presents a slightly different
program to celebrate the season with a dinner and a choir
and instrumental performance, including selections sung by
the Broadoaks Children's Choir. The event will take place
Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 in Arnold Hall on the Whittier campus.

Campus Welcomes Prospective Students For Merit Competition
The
annual fall High School Honors Weekend for qualifying
prospective students will take place November 16 - 18.
During this three-day intensive program, applicants will
compete for prestigious John Greenleaf Whittier

Moliere Comedy Takes Center Stage
Running November 15 -19, the first full-scale production
this season by the Whittier College Theatre Department will
be Moliere's "Tartuffe," a play widely regarded as one of
the author's best works satirizing religious hypocrisy and
false piety among the upper classes of 17th-century France.

Scoring an impressive eight goals and completing six kickouts, three assists, and two steals during two

A Renaissance Cometh
The Whittier College Renaissance Music Festival will take place

"Sovereign Threads" Delivers Tactile Cultural Connection
Associate Professor of Religious Studies Marilyn Gottschall's first-year writing seminar
headed out to the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum to
explore visual symbolism offered in the exhibit "Sovereign
Threads: A History of Palestinian Embroidery." The excursion
tied together the class' reading of memoirs by Muslim women
and an American author who lived among the Iraqis and found
embroidery a key vehicle of communication and community

Author Tim O'Brien to Discuss Vietnam Text
As part of Fall Orientation, new students and Whittier
faculty jointly read O'Brien's celebrated work, The

interning with a local oncologist, Ashley Plant ’06
researched and found significant evidence linking certain
vitamin deficiencies with cancer patients. Plant’s data
was subsequently published in international medical

54 Spring Breakers Participate in Katrina Cleanup
Two faculty and 54 students from Whittier College
traveled to New Orleans this week to assist in the cleanup

Poet Athletes Earn Conference Honors
Last week, right fielder Aaron Sheehey’06 was named
“SCIAC Athlete of the Week,” joining previous honoree and
fellow teammate Matt Morgado ’08, the Poets’ designated
hitter. Coach Rizzo’s baseball team is currently #2 in the
conference with an 8-4 record, and a 17-14-1 record overall.

Cabaret favorites Karen Benjamin & Allen Chapman return to
the Shannon Center for a performance of music and comedy on

Running Dec.1- 4, the Whittier College Choir once again
dons traditional costume and offers a medieval evening of
music, dining, and pleasant diversion. Advance reservations

Whittier: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
On Friday November 11, a multimedia production with live musical performances
by students, faculty, and alumni talent showcased the rich
history and future promise of Whittier College. There are
plans to release a DVD of the event, which was presented in the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the
Performing Arts.
