Whittier Team Wins L.A. Student Film Festival Award
On Nov. 13, Campus MovieFest, billed as the "world’s largest student film festival," held its Los Angeles Grand Finale at the famed Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The event featured the top 16 short movies made in one week from over 8,000 students at USC, UCLA, Pomona, and Whittier. Winner of the Best Concept award for the short “When We Lost Chris” was Whittier first-year student team Christopher Davis, Cassie Duray-Bito, Ashley Delzell, Lilia Hole, Jeffrey DeBarr, Mark Juaton, Allison Desfor, and Zack Knight.

Whittier College Choir Hosts Holiday Concert and Dinner
Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 in Memorial Chapel, the Department of Music presents its holiday program, featuring dinner and a choir performance, including selections sung by the Broadoaks Children's Choir. Tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance by calling 562.907.4237.

Violence Prevention Workshop Offered

Besting hundreds of entries in a student competition to remake the “little black dress,” Cassey Ho ’09 was among the 18 winning designers whose ensembles hit the catwalk in the “Emerging Stars” fashion show, held during the 2007 San Francisco Fashion Week.

Selections from Whittier's Fairchild Collection to Exhibit at Huntington Library
The Fairchild Aerial Photography Collection will be among 41 historical collections, museums, and archives exhibiting at Archives Fever: The Second Annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar on September 29 at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Presented by L.A. as Subject, a research collective hosted by USC libraries, the bazaar will feature educational programs that illuminate the city's rich history.

International Event To Explore The Future of U.S.-China Business Relations
Whittier College is proud to host The Future of U.S.-China Business Relations, a video teleconference in "real time" on September 26, in the Ruth B. Shannon Center. Professor Awarded National Science Foundation Grant
The National Science Foundation awarded Glenn Piner, associate professor of physics, a multi-year grant exceeding $150K to continue his study of a large survey of blazars, the extremely active regions surrounding massive black holes at the centers of distant galaxies. Piner uses the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Long Baseline Array, a system of 10 interconnected radio-telescope antennas spanning the United States, to analyze these astronomical objects.

Celebrated Author Dave Eggers to Meet With New Whittier Students
Eggers, author of What is the What--the assigned summer reading for all incoming Whittier students--will visit campus to meet with students on Monday, September 10. Eggers will discuss his book, which focuses on the real life story of Sudanese refugee Valentino Achak Deng, a  member of the Lost Boys of Sudan program.

Irvine Fellow Discusses Influence of Spanish in the U.S.
Mariano Zaro, the 2007-08 Irvine Fellow in Spanish at Whittier College, participated in an expert roundtable on the impact of the Spanish language on the United States in terms of media and mundane usage, as well as quality of spoken word. Other panelists included former vice president of Univision Jorge Mettey and Orange County Weekly columnist Gustavo Arellano. Honor Society Recognized
Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, awarded Whittier College with the prestigious El Premio Octavio Paz, an honor recognizing chapters that maintain an outstanding record of activity and service for three consecutive years. Whittier’s Upsilon Pi was one of eight collegiate chapters to receive the award this year, out of more than 500 chapters nationwide; Doreen O’Connor-Gomez, associate professor of Spanish and Upsilon Pi advisor, accepted the award on behalf of the College at the organization’s August convention in San Diego.

Art Prof Featured in "Bosnian Newsweek"
Associate Professor of Art Endi Poskovic was featured in Slobodna Bosna, the largest weekly tabloid magazine in Bosnia, equivalent to America’s Newsweek. The three-page article profiles his art, teaching, life, and career in his adopted country, the United States, and how it all began in the Socialist Federative Republic of Bosnia (then Yugoslavia).

President Sharon Herzberger Interviewed on NPR
The president talked about the college's connection to United States President Richard Nixon, a member of the class of 1934. The interview was a part of a story focusing on the attempt to rethink the legacy of the nation's 37th president at the Nixon Library. Baritone Sam Papageorge ’06 and barbershop quartet “Roadtrip” took top honors at the 2007 Bank of America Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest, held in Denver in July. Abe Wins APAICS Internship

Melanie Abe ’09 has been selected as one of only nine students nationwide for a summer internship with the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). The internship will provide Abe an opportunity to participate in the federal government and in the public policy-making process, as well as meet with colleagues at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which make up the Tri-caucus activities.

Psychology Professor Weighs Thesis of Reality Star
In a feature story for Fox News, Whittier professor and noted relationship expert Charles T. Hill considers advice proffered in new book Better Single Than Sorry, written by a former contestant of TV's "The Bachelor." Alumna Athlete Honored as "Modern-Day" Pioneer

Lauren Vargas '08 has won a Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship. The summer fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University will assist in her preparation for graduate school in public policy.

Student Becomes College's Fifth All-American
Junior Shuree Gangloff placed fifth in the discus event at the 2007 Track & Field Division III Championships at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. She became the college's fifth All-American in ten years.

Latino Graduation Ceremony Offers Students "Time to Shine"
On Saturday, May 19, about 40 Latino/a students took to the stage at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for a special graduation celebration, and a chance to say a very personal "thanks" to their families. The article appeared in the May 20 issue of the Whittier Daily News.

Students Honored at Art Show
Sophomore Desiree Stewart won the top prize in the annual exhibition of student art. Stewart won $100 for her untitled wood sculpture. Another sophomore, Whitney Rosen, took second place and received $75 for her  painting called George. Megan Gerber ’10 earned third place and $50 for her untitled metal sculpture.

Honors Convocation 2007

Student Newspaper Goes Digital
Quaker Campus recently launched an online edition of its weekly newspaper. This web version of the student-produced publication features photos, news, opinion and much of what appears in the print edition.

Professor Reads Poetry in Subway Station

Junior Swims Onto NCAA All-American Team
Manny Sanchez '08 has been named to the All-American swimming team in the 100 breaststroke. Sanchez recently won a spot on the team after finishing sixth in the breaststroke preliminaries. The top eight finishers make the All-America team.

Student Production of Award-Winning Play to Be Performed
Stop Kiss, a play about unexpected love between two women, will be staged from May 2 to 5, 8 p.m. and May 6, 2 p.m. at the Studio Theatre, Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts.

Historian Writes Winning Article
Associate Professor of History Laura McEnaney has been awarded the 2007 Binkley-Stephenson Award for best scholarly article published in the Journal of American History in 2006. McEnaney received the award during the 100th annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians.

Math Major Earns Prize
Whittier math major Jacquelyn Rische ’07 earned an award at the MAA Undergraduate Poster Session held during the 2007 Joint Mathematical Meetings in New Orleans. Rische’s project, “Algebraic Interleavers in Turbo Codes,” was among the top-scoring presentations, and the result of her collaboration with two fellow research partners from the Applied Mathematical Sciences Summer Institute.

Shannon Center Featured in Hawaiian Airlines In-flight Entertainment Video
Every mainland-bound Hawaiian Airlines flight during February and March will show an in-flight entertainment video featuring a segment on musical group HAPA --specifically their annual concert tour, which begins at the Ruth B. Shannon Center. This segment was filmed entirely at Whittier College, and includes an on-screen interview with Shannon Center Manager David Palmer.

Red Hen Press Awards Tony Barnstone Prize for Poetry Collection
Professor of English Language and Literature Tony Barnstone has been awarded the Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award for best poetry collection. The award was given by Red Hen Press, a Southern California-based nonprofit publisher whose mission is to support quality literature that may otherwise be overlooked by larger commercial houses. Nixon '34, the Nixon Fellowship Program will provide students with paid internships, scholarship, and research opportunities focusing on public service. David Paddy Wins Professor of the Year Award
Associate Professor of English Language and Literature David Paddy has been honored as California’s Professor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Panel to Explore U.S. and the Cold War
On January 10 from 4 - 6p.m., a panel of distinguished speakers will discuss U.S. foreign policy and actions during the Cold War. Following, human rights activist and public murals artist Francisco Letelier will share personal experiences and perspective on "The Other Side of U.S. Foreign Policy." In their two consecutive games, Whittier's come-from-behind win has delivered spectators edge-of-their-seats entertainment. "Nixon in China Series" Offers November Film Screening and Discussion                                                                                          To commemorate the 35th anniversary of Whittier alumnus and former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon's historic trip to China, the College is planning a yearlong series of related events. On November 27 at 7:00p.m. in the Shannon Center, the College will screen Emmy-award winning documentary "History Declassified: Nixon in China." On November 30, Chen Jian, chief researcher for the film, will discuss his work. Whittier College Choir Hosts Holiday Concert and Dinner      The traditional Madrigal Feaste will take a holiday this year, as the Department of Music presents a slightly different program to celebrate the season with a dinner and a choir and instrumental performance, including selections sung by the Broadoaks Children's Choir. A Renaissance Cometh

"Sovereign Threads" Delivers Tactile Cultural Connection                                                                                      Associate Professor of Religious Studies Marilyn Gottschall's first-year writing seminar headed out to the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum to explore visual symbolism offered in the exhibit "Sovereign Threads: A History of Palestinian Embroidery." The excursion tied together the class' reading of memoirs by Muslim women and an American author who lived among the Iraqis and found embroidery a key vehicle of communication and community between women. 54 Spring Breakers Participate in Katrina Cleanup

Last week, right fielder Aaron Sheehey’06 was named “SCIAC Athlete of the Week,” joining previous honoree and fellow teammate Matt Morgado ’08, the Poets’ designated hitter.
