Greetings!
As Whittier College's 14th president, I am
excited, delighted, and also a bit humbled
to be leading this venerable institution. It is truly an honor.
Recently I was given a copy of A Quaker Book of Wisdom, to help me
understand Whittier values and history. Two quotes in particular
captured my attention. The first is "let your life speak," a
wonderful reminder of the principles that guided our predecessors
and why Whittier today is so committed to liberal learning,
diversity, and educating students to make a difference. The second
is about schools: "A school can educate in ways in which its
curriculum cannot. It's the soul of the school - its intangible
persona, its character, its principles, its daily life over
time..." These words capture the essence of this extraordinary
community; every person on this campus contributes to the soul of
Whittier College and helps to transform lives, sometimes in ways
that we will only know in years to come.
Our College’s namesake, John Greenleaf Whittier, was one of this
country's foremost "poets of place." To get to know and truly
understand this place, I urge you all to come to Whittier’s
campus, to explore our new library, and to talk with our faculty
and students. This is a vibrant, challenging, and friendly
academic community, and perhaps the perfect place to “let your
life speak.”
Sincerely yours,
Sharon Herzberger
