Hain has taught at the University of San Diego Law School and Wayne State University Law
School and has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. His subjects
include civil procedure, constitutional law, evidence, federal courts and government
contracts. Hain received his B.A. and LL.B. from Southern Methodist University and his
LL.M. from Harvard University.

Haythorn's subjects include admiralty law, advanced legal bibliography, agency and
conflicts of law and sea law. He is a retired Air Force Staff Judge Advocate General, past president of
the Southern California Association of Libraries, and Staff Commodore of the California
Yacht Club. Haythorn is also a member of the Washington State Bar Association
and an adjunct associate professor at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and
Information Studies.
He received his B.A. from DePauw University, an M.A. from Chapman College, a
J.D. from the University of Puget Sound and an M.L.L. from the University of Washington.
HEILMAN, JOHN

Heilman is a city councilmember in West Hollywood. He has served as mayor five
times. He developed the city's rent stabilization ordinance, its
inclusionary housing policy and its ordinance prohibiting discrimination
against people living with AIDS. He teaches civil procedure, community
property, criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence and torts. He
is a board member of the National League of Cities. He is a past board
member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and of
the Local Government Commission of California.

Dr. Hill has conducted a 25-year study tracking the relationships of 231 couples in the
Boston area, examining breakups, marriage, sex, divorce and related issues. He found that
couples who stayed together tended to have four common characteristics: age, intelligence,
educational plans and levels of attractiveness.
Dr. Hill graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon, and he holds an M.A. in
sociology from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard
University.

Dr. Howard's expertise is the relationships between the organization of work and other
aspects of people's lives and in U.S.-Mexican border society and culture. Dr. Howard spent
his 1994-95 sabbatical year in Mexico and Canada studying the Mexican-Canadian
relationship since NAFTA.
He earned a B.A. at Whittier College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from
Harvard University.
