Whittier College and Whittier Law School Guide to the Experts Expert BiographiesSEBANC, ANNEAssiociate Professor, Child Development Phone: (562) 907-4200, ext. 4440 * Children * Education * Gender * Relationships Dr. Sebanc's research has centered on social development in early childhood and she is working with Whittier College students to collect data on the qualities of children's peer relationships and their aggressive and prosocial behavior. Currently working on two separate manuscripts based on this research, Dr. Sebanc also co-authored "Imaginary Companions in Preschool Children" (Developmental Psychology 2000) with T.R. Gleason and W.W. Hartup. Her most recent presentation was "Stress Physiology at Childcare: Links Between Cortisol Production and Age, Type of Care, and Temperment at the fifth National Research Conference of Head start in Washington, D.C. in June of 2000. Dr. Sebanc has a B.S. in psychology from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D in child psychology from the Institute of Child development at the University of Minnesota, where she served as a research assistant. She recently served a year as a Clinical Psychology Fellow at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago with a specialization in group therapy. She was also the recipient of a Durkin-Glatzer Scholarship from the American group Psychotherapy Association in 2003. Dr. Shaikh has published articles in several respected journals, including “The use of verbal response mode coding system in determining patient and physician roles in medical interviews,” in Health Communication, Vol. 13, No. 1, as well as co-authored a chapter in The Verbal Communication of Emotions: Interdisciplinary Approaches, which will be published in 2004. She has conducted research with the National Heart, Lung and Blood institute of the National Institutes of Health, the California Wellness Foundation and the University of California, Los Angeles, among others. Dr. Shaikh holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Miami University SWIFT, CHERYL Professor, Biology Phone: (562) 907-4273 * Biology * Environmental Issues * Plants * Science (Education Reform) Dr. Swift's interests lie in the areas of conservation biology--particularly wildlife corridors and regional impacts of land conversion--and the role of annual wildflowers in post-fire recovery. She also advises K-12 teachers in ways to improve science instruction for the California Science Implementation Network. Dr. Swift earned a B.A. from Occidental College, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. |
