A native of Nigeria, Dr. Iyam has conducted research on
such topics the cultural dynamics of African urban and rural economies as a way
to understanding culture change and response to technological challenges,
resource management and the social and economic conditions of post-colonial
societies, as well as cultural differentiation and differences among United
States minority groups and their response to mainstream expectations. He is the
author of two books and several articles on social conditions in Nigeria, and he
has also published articles on domestic group organization in Watts, Calif., and
industrialization in rural areas of Korea.
Dr. Iyam has also presented more than 20 academic papers at
conferences across the U.S. and abroad. He has received several writing grants
for his work from such organizations as the Rockefeller Foundation, the African
Academy of Sciences and the UCLA Department of Anthropology. He is a member of
the American Anthropological Association, Association of Africanist
Anthropologists, the Society for Visual Anthropology and the African Studies
Association.
He holds a B.A. in theatre arts from the University of
Calabar in Nigeria, an M.F. A. in theater arts with an emphasis on motion
pictures and television, an M.A. in anthropology and a Ph.D. in anthropology
from the University of California, Los Angeles.
