ADD:                      Steve Gach photographs Los Angeles—the Los Angeles we see from our cars.  “These black and white photographs reflect my desire to record the familiar visual iconography of the urban landscape, which has always been central to my own experience as an L.A. native; too many hours cruising L.A. streets has made this possible,” said Gach.  “Anyone living in L.A. knows that viewing these streets from the interior of a vehicle … moving or not … is central to the L.A. experience.  What appears for only an instant … becomes an illusion the very next moment.  I am always surprised and delighted that such ordinary subject matter, so seemingly mundane, can also look so mysterious on the landscape.  The spectacle of visual discord on city streets always informs my work; this search for enigmatic imagery, at once both familiar and strange, is the inspiration for these photographs.”
