Arab Minority Rights Lawyer to Speak at Whittier College 

WHAT:                        Marwan Dalal, staff attorney for ADALAH, the Legal Center for
Arab Minority Rights in Jerusalem, will discuss “Israel: Democracy or Apartheid?”

WHEN:                        7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17

ADD:                      In his work with ADALAH, Dalal has filed and argued several
petitions before the Israeli Supreme Court challenging
discriminatory laws and policies in education, land and housing,
political participation, and social and economic rights against
Palestinian citizens of
Israel. He is currently the legal coordinator
for ADALAH’s work before the official Commission of Inquiry,
which is investigating the killings of 13 Palestinian citizens of
Israel by the police in October of 2000, and he is also a member
of the legal defense team representing a member of the Knesset,
Dr. Azmi Bishara, on charges stemming from his political speeches. 
Dalal’s most recent petition to the Supreme Court challenges the
Israeli army’s use of Palestinian civilians as human shields in the
Occupied Territories.  Dalal has a master of law degree in
international law and human rights from the American University Washington College of Law and an L.L.B. from the College of
Management in Israel.  The talk is being sponsored by the
co-teachers of Whittier’s Arabs and Muslims paired course,
Hilmi Ibriham, professor of physical education and recreation,
and Joe Price, professor of religious studies.
