Chorale Bel Canto Opens Whittier College’s 66th Annual Bach Festival

         Chorale Bel Canto will open Whittier College's 66th annual Bach Festival with "The Glory of Bach and the Baroque: Expressions of Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Death," at First Friends Church at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.

          The concert will include three works from the early, middle and high Baroque period—the 17th to mid 18-centuries, including Johann Sebastian Bach’s Komm, Jesu, Komm.  The other two pieces on the program are Beatus Vir by Claudio Monteverdi and Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schütz.  The concert includes soloists and a double choir accompanied by organ and brass.

Chorale Bel Canto is a community-based masterworks chorale, with a mission to present diverse, high-quality music in appropriate venues throughout the San Gabriel Valley.  Director Stephen Gothold is professor of music at Whittier College.

Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is an independent, four-year college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts.  Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
