For Immediate Release - September 4, 2000 CALENDAR Music of the 40s at Whittier College WHAT: The Fabulous 40s, featuring the Modernaires with Paula Kelly, Jr. WHEN: 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 COST: $30 for the general public, $20 for students and seniors ADD: Join the Modernaires as they celebrate 60 years in show business. The original group, Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein and Bill Conway, started as a trio with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra, later joining the Ozzie Nelson Band and working with Fred Waring and Paul Whiteman. In 1939, Glenn Miller borrowed the group to record "It's Make Believe Ballroom Time," and soon after they became an important part of the most popular big band of all time. Now featuring Paula Kelly, Jr. and her sister, Martha Dickinson, Bill Tracy and Alan Copeland, the "Mods" perform timeless Miller hits like "Juke Box Saturday Night," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Kalamazoo," and "Moonlight Cocktail," in addition to lending their unique touch to some of today's most contemporary music.
