Reference: 02/03: 16 Bennie Maupin Jazzes Up Chamber Series at Whittier College WHAT: The Bennie Maupin Trio WHEN: 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29
WHERE:
The Ruth B. Shannon Center
for the Performing Arts at Whittier
COST:
$15 for the general public,
$12 for senior citizens, and $5 student ADD: Bennie Maupin and his trio have performed two jazz concerts at the Shannon Center, which is proud to present the world premiere of new music created under the auspices of the Chamber Music America 2001–02 New Works Creation and Presentation Program. The first half of the show will feature the trio—saxophone, bass and drums—and one additional musician playing prepared piano and synthesizer. The score is in suite form and will feature various combinations of instruments—solo, duo, trio and quartet in a series of five to six movements. Maupin says the composed structures should make a “fitting contrast to short episodes of group and solo improvisations. My intent is to combine the elements of composition and jazz improvisation into a deeply personal and engaging expression of modern 21st century chamber music.” The second half of the concert, “Inner Sky,” will feature the trio and quartet with the spoken word and modern dance improvisations.
