Student Writes and Produces His Own "Zoo"

For his senior project, Adam Pava wanted a real learning experience, so he decided to write and produce his own original musical comedy, "Zoo."

Steve Gothold, professor of music, gave Pava a hand by writing and orchestrating all musical pieces that accompany Pava's lyrics. "Adam and I have collaborated on various projects before, and he is great to work with, but this is a larger scope for both of us," explained Gothold.

Pava set out to write lyrics for all 14 of the musical's songs, and found that "The lyrics were the most challenging part because they have to tell the story in such a clear way that the audience immediately understands what is happening when a character sings a line from a song."

Focusing primarily on humorous family themes, "Zoo" is a story about a Jewish-American family get-together gone wrong. Internal conflicts abound as three generations of family attempt to eat a simple family meal together. All the action in this two-hour musical takes place in one evening, before and after the dinner.

Live music for the performance will include a piano, a stand-up bass and drums‹all of which will accompany the performers on songs such as "Zoo," "Normal Kid," "The Family Meal" and "The Happiest Family in the World."

Directed by both Pava and Gothold, "Zoo" will premier in the Studio Theater at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 11-12 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $2.00. For more information, call the Shannon Center box office at (562) 907-4203.
