Whittier College Baseball Player Named Honorable Mention SCIAC Athlete of the Week
Whittier College sophomore Randy Sobek received All-SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Honorable Mention recognition as the SCIAC Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9.
Sobek is a pitcher for the baseball team, and his statistics for the week were: IP (6.2); Hits (5); Runs (2); Earned Runs (0); BBs (3); Ks (7); ERA (0.00); Record (1–0).
Sobek, who attended Serra High School in San Diego, was born with one arm and pitches similarly to Jim Abbott, the former Angel, Yankee and Brewers pitcher who also was born with just one arm.
Sobek said he met Abbott in the Angel clubhouse when he was younger, and that the major league player was an inspiration to him. Abbott taught him how to do the glove transfer, and instilled in him the confidence to achieve his goal of being a college baseball player.
Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is an independent, four-year college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts. Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
