THE RUTH B. SHANNON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS "SUMMER AT THE CENTER"
This summer, the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College will be hosting a month of music and dance with something for everyone. Summer at the Center--every Thursday through Sunday night in August--features country western line dancing, salsa dancing, swing dancing and Hawaiian music concerts.
Country Western Thursdays
Get out your cowboy hat and put on your boots ya'll, because live music from the Sam Morris band, Marty Taylor and the Southern Comfort band, and David Leach & the Whiskey River Band can be heard every Thursday night at the Shannon Center's Country Western Thursdays. Western line dancing, as well as dancing lessons, demonstrations, and competitions are included every Thursday night--the fun will be kicked off at 7 p.m.
On every Friday in August, the Shannon Center will team up with Albert Torres Productions to bring some of the best local talents in salsa music to Whittier. With live music as well as DJ Pedrito, salsa dancing, and salsa lessons from professional instructors, Latin Fridays are sure to be spicy--activities will heat up at 8 p.m.
Big Band Saturdays
Swing on over to the Shannon Center, starting Saturday, August 1, for the first of four consecutive Big Band Saturday nights. With the return of the John Peace Super Band to Whittier College, the theater will be hoppin' daddy-o!. Dancing--to hits made famous by biggies such as Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller--will be encouraged! Dance classes begin at 8 p.m. with music and dancing to follow at 9 p.m.
Sunday afternoons will sway into the evenings with the traditional sounds of aloha music. In combination with Aloha Joe of Hawaiian Adventure Radio, the Shannon Center will present some of the finest music of the islands. On three Sundays in August (2, 9, 23, and 30), a minimum of two acts will perform including a steel guitar festival featuring Duke Ching, Hawaiian artists Kua'Ana, solo guitarist Lehua Kaapana, and the Hawaiian group Na Pu'ukani. With the combination of the tropical music and dance performances on these warm evenings, you'll think you're in paradise--it all starts at 3 p.m.
Prices for all nights are $12 per person. For more information, call the Whittier College Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at (562) 907-4203.
