Williametta Spencer, adjunct assistant professor of music at Whittier College, will release three new compositions based on the poetry of James Joyce this fall. Contracted by National Music Publishers, the choral works are "Winds of May," "In the Dark Pine Wood," and "Bright Cap and Streamers."

Spencer has received several national awards in composition and has published more than 40 works. Golden Crest Records of New York released a full-length recording of her works in its Authenticated Composers Series, and eight of her choral compositions are featured on a new compact disc of 20th-century American choral music released by Northeastern Records.

The West coast premiere of her 1996 composition, "And the White Rose is a Dove," will be performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Singers, directed by Peter Rutenberg, on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. at the Bel Air Presbyterian Church in West Los Angeles. For tickets and information, call (310) 575-9790.

As an author, she has contributed to the "Music Quarterly", the "Revue Belge de Musicologie" and the "Journal of the National American Teachers of singing." She also produced the video series "Perspectives in Music History," is harpsichordist for L'Antica Musica Consort and is organist/director for Whittier Presbyterian Church. She earned a B.A. from Whittier College, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California.

Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is an independent, four-year college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts. Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
