Room Draw Information Guide 2007-2008

How to sign up for on campus
housing for the upcoming academic year.

Room Draw
Wednesday, April 18, 2007
At 6:00 p.m.
In The Chapel

Whittier College is committed to providing a co-curricular environment which enhances and enriches the academic program and provides students with opportunities for personal and social growth, self-discovery, and an appreciation of one’s responsibilities to oneself and others. Whittier College sees residential living as an integral part of a student’s education. Residential living fosters a sense of community, facilitates the integration of the individual into campus activities and organizations, exposes students in a very direct and personal way to a pluralist community, encourages an atmosphere of free and wide-ranging expression of ideas, and develops in each person capacities for self-direction and deep concern for others.

For these reasons, all Whittier College students are required to live on campus through their junior year unless they reside at their legal residence within a twenty-five mile radius of the College, are twenty-two years of age or older, are married or will have 90 credits earned at the conclusion of the spring 2007 semester. It is the goal of Residential Life to expose as many students as possible to the benefits of living and learning at Whittier College.

Please remember: All first year, sophomore and junior students are required to live in Whittier College housing unless:
1) the student resides at his/her legal residence, defined as where the student is claimed as a dependant on the 2006 Federal income tax return and within a 25 mile radius of the college; or
2) the student is or will be 22 years of age on or before the first day of fall 2007 classes;
3) the student is married or
4) the student has earned 90 credit hours at the end of the Spring 2007 semester.

Seniors and other students not required to live on campus who choose not to participate in Room Draw and then change their mind, must submit a Housing Request Form and will be assigned housing during the summer.

Graduate students are not eligible for Room Draw but can submit a Housing Request Form. The Office of Residential Life does provide assistance to eligible students seeking off-campus housing.

Study Abroad
Students planning to attend exchange programs in the fall should make plans to live on campus during January interim and/or the spring semester by filling out a Housing Request Form prior to going abroad.

Please note that if you plan to study abroad we cannot reserve a room for you during Room Draw, yet every effort will be made to accommodate your preferences upon your return from studying abroad.

If you are not certain that you will be accepted by the study abroad program and want to ensure that you will have housing in the fall, we advise you to participate in Room Draw. However, please notify us immediately once you are accepted by the program. Your room will not be held for you if you are not enrolled in fall semester classes at the College.

If you wish to be assigned to a single room when you return from studying abroad, you may sign up on the Single Room Wait List, which will be available starting April 30, 2007 (see page 7 for more information about the Wait List).

The Residence Living License Agreement
By signing the Residence Living License Agreement, you agree to reside in a college-operated residence for the entire academic year (both the fall and spring semesters). The Agreement is a binding contract between you and the College. Be sure to read carefully before signing the Agreement.

How To Obtain A Lottery Number

Students will participate in Room Draw according to a randomly assigned lottery number. All first year, sophomore & junior students must submit a signed 2007-2008 Residence Living License Agreement (enclosed) to the Office of Residential Life by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11th.

Seniors
If you are a senior (90+ units) you will not receive a lottery number. If you do want to live on campus you must notify the Office of Residential Life no later than April 9, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. so that you can be entered into the lottery.

Lottery numbers are assigned on the basis of class standing. Class standing is determined by adding the number of units you have completed and the number of units for which you are currently registered. Your class standing is based upon the following:

First Year……………………….29 units or less
Sophomore….……………………….30-59 units
Junior………………….…………….60-89 units
Senior……………….………….90 or more units

If you have any holds or outstanding balances, please, take care of them prior to Room Draw. Failure to do so will prevent you from participating in the room selection process.

Room Draw information sessions will be held in the Stauffer Lobby on April 10th and 11th at 5:15pm.

Lottery numbers will be posted on April 17, 2007 at each residence hall desk, in the Office of Residential Life, the Campus Inn the Mail Room. The lists will be posted NO EARLIER THAN 12:00 noon.

HOW TO GO THROUGH ROOM DRAW
The actual room reservation will take place on Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Students will meet in the Chapel according to the following schedule:

6:00 p.m. Wardman Hall 1. Squatting Whittier Scholars
6:15 p.m. Squatter's Privileges 2. Whittier Scholars who wish to live in Wardman
7:00 p.m. Seniors
7:30 p.m. Juniors 3. Squatting Non-Whittier Scholars
8:00 p.m. Sophomore/First Year

STUDENTS MUST BRING A WHITTIER COLLEGE PICTURE I.D. TO ROOM DRAW.

Students will begin the Room Draw process in the Chapel. Students will not be permitted to participate in Room Draw without a lottery number and a Whittier College I. D. Your lottery number will be called and you will line up to check in. If you do not have a Residence Living License Agreement on file, you will be asked to sign one before selecting your room.

Once in the Chapel, you will be escorted to the table with the hall of your choice, make your room selection, and immediately exit the facility. We kindly ask that you refrain from waiting for your friends or stopping to chat with them.

Both roommates must be present at the time of the room reservation. You should participate at the time the higher lottery number is scheduled in order to maximize your range of choices.

Squatters’ privileges, with the exception of first year students living in Johnson and Stauffer, may be exercised by students residing in double rooms who wish to return to the same room. If two students wish to squat a room together who do not currently live together, only the lottery number of the student residing in the room that is being squatted may be used. In other words, the student with the higher lottery number may not use his or her number to squat a room in which she or he does not already reside.

If both current roommates wish to squat their room with a different roommate, the room will go to the current roommate with the HIGHER lottery number.

Students are not guaranteed squatters’ privileges!

A limited number of single rooms will be available during Room Draw. YOU MAY NOT SQUAT A SINGLE ROOM. Please have an alternate (double room) should your first choice be unavailable. If there are no singles available when you go through Room Draw, you will be able to sign up on a Single Room Wait List. This list will be available starting Monday, April 30, 2007 at 8:00 A.M. Please note that signing up on the Wait List does not guarantee you a single room. Also, the Wait List does not carry over from one academic year to the next.

YOU MUST SIGN UP WITH A ROOMMATE!!!

If you are having difficulty finding a roommate, please see your RA or Area Coordinator for assistance. The Office of Residential Life reserves the right to consolidate residents assigned alone in double rooms.

Several rooms will be reserved for new students and may not be available for Room Draw. Please have an alternate room should your first choice be unavailable.

Room Draw by Proxy
If you will be unable to participate in Room Draw, you must designate a proxy to represent you. Your proxy will select a room in your absence. However, the proxy may not sign a Residence Living License Agreement for you. It is important that your proxy understand your preferences and alternatives in the event your first choices are not available. You will not be able to change a room assignment made by your proxy.

Students may obtain a Proxy Form in the Office of Residential Life. The completed form, signed Residence Living License Agreement must be on file in the Office of Residential Life no later that 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 10, 2007.

A proxy may only choose your room with your lottery number. A proxy may NOT choose both your room and his/her room with the same lottery number unless you and the proxy are squatting or choosing a room together (please see page 7 for rules about squatting).

A Final Note About Room Draw
We strongly encourage you to find someone with whom you are compatible and sign up for a room together. It is best that you make the decision to select a roommate prior to Room Draw. Please do not register for a double room by yourself. Next year’s new student and transfer student classes may be large and you will more than likely be assigned to live with someone you do not know.

After Room Draw
Once the Room Draw procedure has been completed, the Office of Residential Life will input all assignments into the College computer system. Your assignment confirmation will be sent to your permanent address.

If you did not choose a roommate during Room Draw, Residential Life will assign you one. You will receive your roommate’s address and phone number, so you may contact each other during the summer.

If you have any questions regarding the Room Draw procedure, please stop by or call the Office of Residential Life at (562) 907-4223 or contact your Area Coordinator. The Guide to Choosing Your Whittier College Residence Hall is also available in the Philadelphia House.

All students who do not meet the requirements to live off-campus are required to participate in annual room selection process. If an eligible student does not participate in room selection, a room will be assigned to the student and his/her account will be charged the full cost of a double space and a 19 FLEX meal plan for the academic year.

Disability Accommodations
Students that have special medical needs must submit all documentation to Rosalba Rios in Disability Services by Wednesday, April 11, 2007.
