What is in a residence hall room and what do I need to bring?
Your room is furnished with a bed frame, mattress, dresser, closet, desk and chair. Many of the rooms in the residence halls are also equipped with sinks. You will need to supply linens for an extra long twin bed, towels, pillows and blankets.

You may wish to bring a small television or stereo, toiletries, and a small bucket to carry them, laundry detergent, alarm clock, fan, money for opening a checking/ savings account, pens, paper and notebooks.

Each room has an overhead light, but you may want to bring a desk lamp and a wastebasket. In addition, you may bring other decorative items, however, all college-owned property must remain in the room. The following items are prohibited: microwave ovens (except college approved Micro-Fridges), toasters, waterbeds, electric skillets, ovens, hot plates, halogen lamps and sunlamps.

What is it like living with roommates?
College life brings new experiences your way. The newest of which may be your assigned roommate about whom you know very little. Roommates need to share their thoughts and feelings while living together. Regardless of the extent of your acquaintance, both of you are new to the Poet campus and to residence hall living. The exciting challenge you face is to create a roommate relationship based upon respect for your differences, and the commitment of clear communication and resolution of problems which occasionally arise while living together.

You should discuss your background, personal preferences and habits, how you express your feelings and emotions and what similarities, differences and compromises each of you need to make.

Keep in mind there is no such thing as the "perfect" roommate. If you are open and honest with one another, you will be well on your way to establishing good communication and a rewarding relationship.

Can I change rooms?
Room changes can be arranged by area staff during "room change week" which occurs the third week of each semester. Such room changes must be arranged by your area Coordinator.

What is the guest policy?
Any invited guest may visit in the floor lounge or private room of a resident, with the consent of the roommate, during visitation hours designated for that living area.

May I have overnight guests?
All guests must be respectful of the rights and comfort of roommates at all times. The college does not condone cohabitation. In order to house guests, you MUST receive prior roommate approval. In addition, written roommate and area coordinator approval is required for visits lasting longer than three days. Only the assigned number of students plus two guests may occupy a room at one time. Residents are responsible for their guests' behavior and must inform them of Residential Life policies.

Are there laundry facilities?
Yes, laundry rooms are located in each residence area with washers ($.75) and dryers ($.75). Prices are subject to change.

Do I need personal property insurance?
Yes. Personal property insurance is a good investment. However, be sure you are not already covered by your parents' existing Homeowners' insurance before purchasing new insurance. The college will make reasonable efforts to protect students' property; however, it is understood that the College is not in any way liable for the loss, theft, or damage of any property belonging to residents.

Can I bring a pet?
Health regulations prevent us from permitting pets in the residence halls, with the exception of fish. We very much dislike putting pets out in the cold, so we kindly ask that you refrain from bringing your "best friend" to college.

How can I get involved on campus?
There are over 60 clubs and organizations on campus. One such organization is called the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA), "the voice if the residence halls." IRHA is the leadership body, which promotes inter-hall communication and interaction through programs and events. Each residence hall council elects groups of students who work closely with Residential Life staff to provide input on housing policies and coordinate programs and social activities. We encourage you to become involved in your hall council. It's fun, easy, and a great way to meet others and immediately get involved!
