ABOUT THE SCIENCE & LEARNING CENTER PROJECT

In 2012, the Board of Trustees initiated a plan to conduct a complete redesign of Whittier College's most-used academic facility—Stauffer Science Building— a multi-million dollar project anticipated to transform the learning experience of every student on campus.

Designed to foster interdisciplinary and creative collaboration at every turn, the interior architecture of this new “Science & Learning Center” takes advantage of classroom and corridor space, ensuring continuous tandem of function and form supported with modern technology.  Transparent walls on both exterior façade and interior hallways will further emphasize and inspire cross-disciplinary teamwork, and effectively place “science on display.”

Headquartered at the redesigned facility, and projected to reap the most benefit through shared, open research and teaching labs, will be the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Kinesiology and Nutrition Science, and Psychology. Actively used for 80 percent of all curricular instruction across campus, the modified building must also serve—more than ever—as a vibrant, flexible, and welcoming hub for academic activity, discovery, and learning.

Among the planned programatic changes, the new Science & Learning Center will offer:

  • 13 flexible classrooms for general instruction (including a large lecture/colloquia room)
  • 14 designated “collaboration zones” (alcoves, rooms, and main atrium)
  • 12 teaching labs (including experimental physics, movement, health, and flex labs)
  • 14 research labs (wet and dry, culture and dark rooms, and a shared computational lab)
  • 26 support spaces (specimen storage, prep rooms, microscopy/imaging, equipment storage)
  • 13 shared work areas
  • 49 faculty offices

Additionally, the building’s rooftop area will house classrooms, the Department of Physics & Astronomy’s telescopes, and an outdoor green space for social activities.
