What are the charges for a semester of study abroad?

Josefina Campos (SBC-JYF):
Paris, France (Fall 2006)

You will be charged for a semester of study abroad just as if you were to remain on Whittier campus. In general, you will be billed an amount that is equivalent to regular tuition, a double room, a meal plan (15 meals), and a International Programs Administrative Fee. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the cost breaks down as follows:
• International Programs fee (equivalent to tuition): $14,953
• International Programs Administrative Fee: $500
• International Programs Other Fee (equivalent to $4,310
double room & 15 meal plan board)
• Total (before any credit adjustments to the bill): $19,740

Does my method of payment have to change?

You may use the same payment plan as you usually do any semester. In turn, Whittier College will pay your program fees to the Program Provider. Although program costs vary, program fees typically include program tuition, room and board arrangements, health insurance (where health insurance is not included, Whittier requires that students provide proof of insurance), and administrative fees. However, if a program’s fees exceed the amount of Whittier fees, you will be responsible for paying the difference.

What if I choose to withdraw from a program?

In the event that you choose to withdraw from a program, you will be responsible for reimbursing Whittier for any non-refundable deposits and program fees. Refund policies vary with each program and should be checked prior to applying.

What if I have no meal plan on the program or receive a program scholarship?

In cases where you may be billed and pay directly for the deposit, the Office of International Programs will ensure that the amount is deducted from your Whittier bill. Should you be required to purchase your own meals, Whittier will not charge you for the meal plan. In addition, should you receive a scholarship from your program, that amount will also be deducted from your Whittier bill in the form of a credit to your account.

How much of my financial aid can I apply to study abroad?

All students accepted to Study Abroad will be able to apply to their bills any federal and state loans, along with any outside scholarships or grants they might receive.*

However, where Whittier merit aid and/or grant money is concerned (i.e. Greenleaf scholarships or Whittier grants), it will be distributed in the following manner:

• Students with a 3.5 - 4.0 will be allowed to apply 100% of their Whittier merit/grant aid

• Students with a 3.0 - 3.49 will be allowed to apply 75% of their Whittier merit/grant aid

• If you GPA is below a 3.0, you will not be able to apply any of your Whittier merit/grant aid

• If you study abroad on a non-affiliated program, you will not be able to apply any of your Whittier merit/grant aid

• If you should be selected to study abroad for a second semester you will not be able to apply any of your Whittier merit/grant aid

• If you are accepted to study abroad on an “exception basis” for the semester you will not be able to apply any of your Whittier merit/grant aid

You should apply for financial aid in the regular manner, but should also notify the Office of Student Financing and the Business Office that you will be studying abroad. Furthermore, you may contact the Office of Student Financing to inquire about any additional loans that may be available. It is imperative that you take care of any financial aid paperwork, including the signing of loans, before your departure.
*Please be aware that financial aid policies related to Study Abroad are subject to change.

What expenses should I expect while abroad?

You are responsible for any extra fees not covered in the program’s basic cost. Such costs may include: air transportation to/from program site, visa fees, books, local transportation, and personal expenses. Typically, students spend around $3,000 - $4,500 on these extra expenses, but this depends on your personal spending habits.

It is highly recommended that you set up a budget before you leave, which outlines how much you can spend on travel, clothes, food, etc. Budget guidelines are available in the Office of International Programs. In addition, most programs provide personal expense estimates for each individual program.

Are there outside scholarships available?

Some Affiliated Study Abroad Programs have scholarships available and information is included in their applications. You may need to compile additional information for the scholarship application.
