Office of International Programs
Office of International Programs
Study Abroad is an integral part
of a Whittier College liberal arts education. The
Office of International Programs encourages all students to
consider studying abroad for a semester, full year, Jan
term, or summer, and its staff is more than happy to help
you figure out which program is the right fit. Study abroad
is no longer just for language students; it can complement
almost any major, imparting a global perspective to your
overall academic experience. If you are studying language,
immersion into the culture of a foreign language is
essential for developing speaking and comprehension skills,
as well as cultural sensitivity.
Approved courses which are taken
abroad are fully transferrable to your academic program, and
students can take courses to meet major, minor, or general
education requirements. Arrangements can also be made for
credit-bearing internships, or volunteer and work abroad
programs. Students who qualify for financial aid can
continue to use this aid while earning credit abroad.

This course, “Doorways to North Africa,” uses literature,
film and other media as a foundation for approaching the
histories and cultures of the Maghreb (North Africa),
especially Morocco. The novels will delve into the history,
culture and religion of the region in the 20th century, and
will be supplemented with readings on social issues,
economics, and other pertinent themes. Students will

confront this region.
