PROGRAM
PROVIDERS
The Program Providers run the actual
programs; they are considered the “specialists” regarding
their respective programs or countries and can provide very
specific information regarding classes or housing abroad.
They help students with pre-departure services, such as
providing information about how to obtain a visa for each
specific country or how money matters are best handled while
there. They provide on-site orientation upon arrival in the
country, arrange for housing, field trips and transcripts.
Perhaps most importantly, Program Providers employ Resident
Directors and staff members who live and work in the cities
program locations. Among many advantages, the Resident
Director’s level of local expertise enhances the overseas
experience. Resident Directors are readily available to help
students with needs that may arise during their time abroad.
Whittier’s flagship International Program is the
Copenhagen Program, founded in cooperation with Denmark’s
International Study Program (DIS) in 1959. The Copenhagen
Program offers courses that make extensive use of experts in
the field and study trips. Students may emphasize the
liberal arts in general, humanities and social sciences,
international business, international relations/political
science, mass communication and journalism, medical practice
and policy, marine biology and ecology, or early
multicultural education. The highlight of the program for
many Whittier students is the opportunity to live with a
Danish host-family. The program also provides a three-week
mid-term break, which allows for extensive travel throughout
Europe including the possibilities of a weeklong study tour
of Russia, a “Czech Trek” through the rugged Czech
countryside, a Scottish Highland tour, or a Renaissance
Italy tour, all organized and led by DIS.

In addition to the Copenhagen program, Whittier offers
students a variety of programs in over 25 countries.
Whittier College has its own consortia agreements with
programs in Australia, Iceland, India, Japan, and Spain. The
College also has affiliations with other academic
institutions and organizations such as the American
Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), Arcadia University,
Butler University, The Center for Cross-Cultural Studies
(CC-CS), International Education of Students (IES),
International Studies Abroad (ISA) and Sweet Briar College.
