Support for Campus Improvements Spotlight

Herrema Basketball Court

Thanks to a generous gift made by Sheryl and Don Herrema ’74, chairman of the Whittier College Board of Trustees, Whittier students have more opportunities to get up and move as pick-up basketball games are now a commonplace activity on campus.

The Herremas’ underwriting enabled the installation of a court surface (you guessed it, it’s purple), two regulation nets, and lighting on the Harris Amphitheater stage. The history of Harris Amphitheater goes back to March 1921, when the student body constructed it in honor of Herbert E. Harris, an English professor who often directed plays there. Over the years, the amphitheater has been the site for graduations, convocations, and other meaningful campus traditions. The addition of the basketball court was completed in 2012.

Now both the intramural sports program and other basketball enthusiasts have an open court to play on, regardless of the competitive season. With the reliably balmy Southern California weather, Herrema Court is seldom vacant, and pickup games like the Orthogonians v. Penns have become a regular part of the campus landscape.

At Whittier College, we’re proud of our beautiful 74 acre campus, and it is a priority to continually enhance it. Financial gifts toward campus improvement projects are an important way the College continues to preserve its historic buildings and grounds. Gifts for campus improvements can range from crucial ongoing maintenance to capital building projects that significantly enhance the College's educational and extracurricular capacity. Naming opportunities exist to recognize significant gifts made for capital purposes. Your support for campus improvement is a wonderful way to personalize your contribution to future generations of Poets.
