Jenny Guerra, Office of Equity and InclusionJenny Guerra, an advocate for social justice and strong supporter of access to higher education, was named the new director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) and Ortiz Programs, formerly known as Whittier College's Cultural Center.

With experience in residential life, student activities, Greek life, leadership development, and multicultural affairs, Guerra most recently served as Whittier's Assistant Director of Leadership Experience and Programs (LEAP).

As the new head of OEI, Guerra's priority will be to promote an inclusive community through social justice, education, and dialogue amongst students.

"I look forward to serve as an advocate and resource for all Whittier College students and making important decisions for students to succeed," said Guerra. "I will provide guidance to students who are first generation and often stress during their first years in college. I plan to engage with our Poets and work toward improving the student experience and searching for innovations to empower students to create systemic changes that will enhance their lives."

Guerra has previously held roles at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, Florida International University, and Armstrong State University. Currently, she is also serving as the co-chair for NASPA/SACSA Conference Liaison for the Undocumented Immigrants and Allies Knowledge Community. Passionate about women empowerment, Guerra also gives back to her community by serving as a survivor advocate/counselor.

Some of the challenges that Guerra will face in this role is student outreach. "I anticipate the challenge in reaching out to all our marginalized students with only two professional staff," said Guerra. "To this end, the center created a new model for our student staff who are now known as Diversity Ambassadors. We will rely on them to serve as our educators to promote equity, diversity and inclusion."

Raised in South Los Angeles, Guerra is a first generation Latina college student. She received her bachelor's degree in animal science and a minor in Spanish from California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly) Pomona and a master's degree higher education administration.
