Orientation is a comprehensive program that assists new students, their parents, and families in making successful transitions into the Whittier College community. 

Sunday, August 17 - Welcome to Whittier Poets (students & 2 guests)

2:30 PM - 3:00 PM Orientation Check-In @ North Lawn

All orientation participants will check in and get relevant materials

3:00 PM - 3:45 PM Opening Remarks from Campus Leaders @ North Lawn

Orientation will begin with remarks from administrators to welcome us all to the Poet experience

3:55 PM - 5:35 PM Circles for New Students @ North Lawn

Our student leaders will guide a welcome session and help orient Poets to our community

4:10 PM - 4:35 PM: Support your Poet Panel
Our engaging panelists will share campus resources and offer transition tips to support Poets

4:40 PM - 5:00 PM: Whittier Works
Our Center for Career and Professional Development will introduce Whittier Works, which distinguishes WC

5:00 PM - 5:35 PM: Parent Mixer & Bingo
This is an opportunity to connect with fellow guardians and play bingo for prizes

5:25 PM - 6:15 PM Dinner @ North Lawn         

We will have prizes coupled with trivia questions throughout the dinner

6:15 PM - 6:30 PM Students: Light of Learning Set Up @ Upper Quad near Science Learning Center

Students will line up and get ready to process for the Light of Learning ceremony, our tradition

Guests: Light of Learning Set Up @ Harris Amphitheater

As we await the process for light of learning, we encourage families to find their seats and enjoy listening to music

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM President’s Convocation and Light of Learning @ Harris Amphitheater

This meaningful tradition has taken place for decades and is the formal beginning of the Whittier College experience and send-off

8:30 PM - 10:00 PM Students only: Movie night with our housing team @ Turner & Stauffer Hall

Our Resident Assistants offer the most engaging events on campus. Learn why as they host a movie night with snacks, crafts, and prizes.

Monday, August 18 - Beginning the POET Experience (students only)

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Breakfast Available @ Campus Inn *optional

Breakfast is free for new students

9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Orientation Check-In @ Shannon Center

All orientation participants will be assigned to groups

9:30 AM - 10:00 AM Group Photos and Energizer @ Shannon Center

Our peer mentors will lead an energizing activity for your groups to reconnect and take group photos to compete in the group photo challenge

10:05 AM - 11:00 AM Wellness at Whittier @ Shannon Center

Our Counseling Center and Peer Health Educators will share resources and tips for wellness

11:05 AM - 12:00 PM Poets are active allies @ Shannon Center

Title IX prevention is important at Whittier, learn about bystander intervention and the process

12:00 PM - 12:30 PM Making the most of your POET Experience @Shannon Center

Our student leader and staff panel will offer tips for you to thrive in academics, lead on campus, and navigate the transition with resilience

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM Lunch @ North Lawn

Lunch will be provided along with lawn games

1:10 PM - 2:00 PM Being in Community Session @ Shannon Center

Our Poets will get an introduction to community standards to better understand their transition to campus regulations and expectations

2:10 PM - 3:00 PM Meet your Faculty Mentor/Poet 101 @ Listed Classrooms

Join POET 101 faculty for the first class. This session is for those enrolled in POET 101.

Transfer & Students Not enrolled in FWPB: Utilizing Your Strengths to Navigate Career Choices @ Villalobos

Our representative from the Career and Professional Development Office will provide resources for navigating your career choices using your strengths and developing a plan for your career journey

3:10 PM - 4:20 PM FWPB 100 Gathering @ Listed Classrooms

Students in FWPB 100 refer to your course schedule to see the classroom location for FWPB 100, and that is where you will meet for your session with your faculty mentor

Transfer & Students Not enrolled in FWPB: Developing a vision for your Whittier experience @ Villalobos

4:30 PM - 5:00 PM Group Challenge Prep @ North Lawn       

At dinner, we will have opportunities for groups to engage and compete for prizes. Our peer mentors will guide you through this getting-to-know-you session to help prepare for the challenge     

5:00 PM - 5:45 PM Dinner & Group Competition @ North Lawn

5:45 PM  - 7:00 PM Field Games @ Upper Quad *optional

Tuesday, August 19 - Becoming a POET (students only)

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM Student Breakfast Available @ Campus Inn *optional

Breakfast is free for new students who checked in and wear their wristband

9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Orientation Check-In @ Lower Quad

9:30 AM - 9:55 AM New Students Rock Signing @ Lower Quad

We have begun a tradition of gathering all new students to sign our historic rock. Come meet your new community around the rock on the lower campus near Painter Ave, and take a class picture

10:00 AM - 10:40 AM Shared Values Bingo @ Shannon Center

Led by members of the Interfaith America team and our student leaders, we will have an interactive session of bingo to get to know each other

10:40 AM - 11:15 AM Leading at Whittier @ Shannon Center

Led by our student leaders, this session will showcase involvement opportunities as Poets so that you can engage in leadership development

11:15 AM - 11:30 AM Final Group Gathering @ Shannon Center

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Lunch & Orientation Closing @ North Lawn

We will have our final interactive lunch, followed by our orientation closing. New students, show us your completed orientation survey to get Poet gear

Students International Students

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM *optional 

Fun @ the GAC (Graham Athletic Center)

Our athletic department has prepared fun activities for you to participate in. Activities include music by the pool, swim, volleyball, dodgeball, basketball, or wellness activities

12:30 PM - 5:00 PM     

Transition for International Students @ Hoover 100

Our international programs and CAAS team will help students with their registration finalizations, visa requirements, and more.

12:30 PM -1:15 PM Veteran Resource Center (VRC) Meet & Greet @ VRC

Learn about the resources and support available to veterans and military-affiliated students, including VA education benefits and Yellow Ribbon

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Open office hour visits *optional

If you have pending items to submit or have questions about your financial aid or payments, use this time to visit our offices

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Dinner @ Campus Inn *optional                            

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Yoga @ Upper Quad *optional

Relieve stress from your body with yoga to prepare for your first day of classes and celebrate the completion of the orientation program.
