What’s different about the Student Health & Wellness Center for 2026-2027?

To supplement its current funding, the Center is going to start making modest charges for visits with nurse practitioners, immunizations, prescription medications, and certain laboratory tests performed on-site. This change will help the Health & Wellness Center continue to provide accessible, comprehensive healthcare services for students using standard healthcare practices.

What services will I be charged for at the Student Health & Wellness Center?

Some Health & Wellness Center services are offered at no additional cost, funded by the College and the student health and wellness fee. As of August 1, 2026, the Student Health & Wellness Center will charge for these services:

  • Visits with nurse practitioners, including treatment of illnesses and injuries
  • General physical examinations, including sports and travel physicals
  • Women’s health examinations
  • Most common immunizations/vaccines
  • Tuberculosis (TB) tests
  • Allergy injections
  • Prescriptions and refills for many medications
  • Large quantities of over-the-counter medications
  • Laboratory testing done in the Center (strep, mono, urine tests, pregnancy tests)

The Student Health & Wellness Center will bill these charges directly to students’ accounts or to the Whittier Health Plan for students who have that insurance. The Center will provide copies of bills that students with other insurance can submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement.

What services does the Student Health & Wellness Center provide without additional charges?

The Student Health & Wellness Center will continue to provide many services without additional charges, including:

  • General health education
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Nurse advice by phone or walk-in
  • Nutrition consultations
  • Referrals for off-campus healthcare (specialists, diagnostic testing, X-rays and scans, hospitals)

Will the Student Health & Wellness Center refer me to other healthcare services if I need care that the Center doesn’t provide? How would I pay for those services?

The Health & Wellness Center will refer students who need more extensive services, including:

  • Visits with medical specialists, diagnostic testing, X-rays and scans, and hospitalization
  • Laboratory tests sent out from the Health Center
  • Ambulance services and emergency care

There is no charge for the referral, but the outside healthcare providers will charge for their services. Students’ health insurance may cover most of those services, and, in many cases, the outside healthcare provider will directly bill the charges to students’ health insurance plans. But coverage varies; we always suggest checking in advance, if at all possible, to make sure your insurance will cover the needed services.

Please remember to bring your photo ID and your insurance card when you seek services off campus.

Can I get care from an urgent care center when the Student Health & Wellness Center is closed?

Whittier students have access to free tele-medicine, tele-counseling, crisis consultation, and wellness videos through UWill; we suggest contacting UWill before seeking services elsewhere.

Please note that urgent care centers, hospitals, and emergency rooms will charge for their services, and your health insurance may or may not cover all the costs of those services.

What does “insurance billing” mean?

Insurance billing means submitting charges to insurance companies for healthcare the Health & Wellness Center provides to students who have health insurance. For now, the Center will be submitting charges only to Aetna for students who have Whittier’s student health insurance plan.

Will my health insurance cover the cost of services from the Student Health & Wellness Center?

  • If you did not waive Whittier’s student health insurance plan and therefore have that health insurance, you can be certain that any charges at the Health & Wellness Center will be covered by your insurance.

  • If you have a different health insurance plan (such as one provided by your parents or guardians), the insurance may or may not cover services at the Health & Wellness Center. However, you can receive services anyway. The Center will apply any charges to your College account and provide receipts you can submit to your health insurance carrier for reimbursement.

Can I use the Student Health & Wellness Center’s services if I do not have or do not want to use health insurance?

Absolutely you can. All students, regardless of their insurance coverage, can continue to receive all the services the Health & Wellness Center offers.

How do I pay for services that the Student Health & Wellness Center charges for?

  • If you are enrolled in the Whittier student health insurance plan, the Center will submit all charges for your care directly to Aetna, the insurance carrier. You will not have to pay anything for those services.

  • If you have a different health insurance plan, the Center is not yet able to submit the charges directly to your insurance carrier—but it can apply those charges to your College account if you cannot pay at the time of service and provide receipts you can use to request reimbursement from your insurance carrier.

How do I get care from the Student Health & Wellness Center if I don’t have money to pay for services?

  • We know money is a real struggle for some students. Most important: the Health & Wellness Center will provide most services regardless of your ability to pay or your health insurance coverage.

  • If you have the Whittier student health insurance plan, you do not have to pay anything; the student health insurance plan will cover the costs.

  • If you don’t have the Whittier student health insurance plan and you don’t have money to pay for services at the Center, we can put those charges on your student account.

  • We don’t want money to be an obstacle to your getting the care you need. Please feel free to contact the Health & Wellness Center to talk with us about ways Whittier can help.

Can I still get over-the-counter medications, like Tylenol, free from the Student Health & Wellness Center?

Yes, in small quantities, so the Center will have enough for other students as well. There will be a charge for larger quantities.

What should I bring with me when I come for appointments or other services at the Student Health & Wellness Center?

Always bring your student ID and your health insurance card with you. Proof of your health insurance card is especially needed for some outsourced clinical laboratory services. If you do not bring a copy of your insurance card at the time labs are drawn, you may be asked to pay out of pocket for those services.

Can my parents find out what treatment I'm receiving at the Student Health & Wellness Center?

Medical information may not be released without the written consent of the patient. If parents have questions or concerns, health center staff can answer generalized questions, but cannot violate patient confidentiality that is protected by law. Students are responsible for notifying parents or guardians of their condition, except in the case of a serious emergency.

What happens if I scheduled an appointment, but I am running late or can’t make it?

It is important to arrive on time and, preferably, a few minutes early to your appointment to allow adequate time to complete necessary forms. If you have an appointment and are running late, please call us to inform us of your situation and we will let you know if you can still be seen that day or shifted to a different time slot or day. This will depend on the reason for your visit. Serious illnesses and injuries will be accommodated into the schedule. If you cannot make your appointment, please call us 24 hours in advance. Failure to show up for your appointment without advance notice will result in a $20.00 NO SHOW fee to be charged to your student account.

I have other questions; can you help me?

We understand that insurance and healthcare billing can sometimes be confusing; we encourage your questions and are eager to answer them. Please contact the Student Health & Wellness Center and we’ll help you sort things out.
