Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Marilyn Gottschall teaches a variety of survey courses (Religions of the West, of the East, New Religious Movements) and thematic courses (Religion and the Body, Sound and Religion, Ritual Studies, Gender and Religion) all of which assume that religion is a human institution that is inextricably connected to social, cultural, and historical contexts.
Her specialization in graduate school was feminist ethics and theology and since teaching at Whittier she has integrated her interest in gender issues with broader socio-cultural analyses. Her current scholarly interests include experiential classroom techniques in the Religious Studies classroom, and the role of religious studies in diversity education; she is also interested in single-sex households in the Maghreb.
