La Jolla, California native, Lilly Grossman,  has written a self-published novel, has been honored by the White House for her student film, worked as the features editor of her high school newspaper, and was homecoming queen. Disabled since birth, Grossman doesn't let a gene mutation slow her down.

Her parents told the Los Angeles Times last year, it wasn't clear that Lilly, now 18, would live long enough to graduate and look ahead to college.

But in the fall, she will be attending Whittier College.

"Whittier wants me, and I'll be a rock star there,'" said Grossman to the Los Angeles Times.
