Students focused on science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) enjoyed a week of opportunities to learn more about taking the next step in their careers.
During the annual STEM Week, Whittier College hosted panels for alumni to share their experience and insights, a workshop to help connect students with real-world research experiences, and an event where students could network with COPE Health Scholars as a potential employer.
The alumni panels represented a diverse range of work experience, showcasing the variety of professional routes that STEM majors might take once they graduate. The panelists included Candida Toribio ’14, a stem cell research associate at the City of Hope National Medical Center; Casandra Rusti ’11, a compensation manager at Hulu; and Esther Leon ’15, a physical therapist at the esteemed Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, among others.
The week concluded with two pre-health events: an advising session with biology professor Erica Fradinger, followed by a panel with alumni and current students, who shared tips and strategies for passing the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).
STEM Week was organized by the Advancing Stem Academic Program (ASAP), which helps connect students with internships, provides dedicated advising, and coordinates a course designed to help students succeed in the STEM fields.
