Approximately 60 high school students from the Whittier Union High School District gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Uptown Whittier to participate in a Self-Discovery Workshop delivered by Whittier College’s Center for Engagement with Communities (CEC) on Saturday, November 7. The students are participating in one of three menHigh school students explore their communitytor programs run by the CEC and this event kicked off the 2015 cohorts. The Self-Discovery Workshop, led by psychotherapist and Whittier College alumna Patricia Pint '07, covered The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz, their Myers-Briggs typology, and included a civic engagement activity. All of the components of the workshop were designed to help the students think about how they can develop strong relationships with their college mentors and use their typology to gain insights into who they are and how their characteristics may affect their interests in post-secondary education and vocation. The students were also asked to walk around their neighborhood and look for assigned items to get them to look at their community with new eyes. The discussion ranged from why they want to go to college to how their college education can help to improve their community.
