On May 8, Samantha Martinez ’26 represented the Class of 2026 as Whittier College's graduate Commencement speaker, celebrating a journey defined by growth, community, and a passion for education.
A lifelong Whittier resident, Martinez enrolled in Whittier College's Master of Arts in Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential program after seeing firsthand the impact it had on members of her own family. Her aunt attended Whittier College, and her cousin completed the very same program before beginning a career as a teacher. Their experiences, combined with the program's reputation for supportive faculty and strong preparation, made Whittier feel like the right place to continue her education.
After completing her bachelor's degree at a much larger university, Martinez was looking for something different. She found it in Whittier's close-knit graduate program, where small cohorts, accessible professors, and meaningful classroom discussions created an environment that exceeded her expectations.
"The professors really go above and beyond," Martinez said. "They take the time to get to know you, help you identify your strengths, and build on the areas where you need to grow. I've become such a better learner and teacher because of this program."
As she prepares to begin her career in education, Martinez hopes to build safe, inclusive learning environments that leverage culturally responsive teaching and encourage critical thinking.
Before she took the Commencement stage, we asked Martinez a few questions about her experience at Whittier.
What was the highlight of your graduate program?
Honestly, my overall experience. One class in particular stands out because my classmates, professor, and I had such a meaningful conversation about how education shaped our lives. Everyone felt comfortable being vulnerable and sharing their experiences, and it reminded me that we're all entering this profession because we're passionate about helping the next generation.
If you could give yourself advice at the start of the program, what would it be?
Relax. I was really nervous because I didn't know anyone or what to expect. But everyone came from different backgrounds with the same passion for education, and it became so easy to build friendships and find my place.
Why would you recommend Whittier College's graduate education program?
The professors truly go above and beyond. They create safe spaces where you can learn, grow, and become the professional you want to be. They take the time to understand each student, helping you build on your strengths while turning your weaknesses into strengths. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
