2018 Senior Profile: Kent Michael Tran

May 23, 2018

Kent TranAs a biology and chemistry double-major, Kent Michael Tran ’18 didn’t just spend his time at Whittier learning about the subjects he was studying—he gained actual hands-on experience, too.

Under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Christina Bauer, Tran conducted research on Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), which are porous geometric structures made of metals that are linked by organic molecules.

“This experience has allowed me to apply the knowledge and techniques taught in my courses and has also given me the experience to collaborate with other scientists as a team in a laboratory setting,” said Tran.

The research opportunity also helped prepare Tran for his goal of becoming a physician and to improve the typical patient-doctor relationship.

As a member and former president of the Orthogonian Society, Tran knows the importance of building and fostering relationships.

“Whittier is a small and rather quiet campus, so you really need to form solid relationships with quality people. The quality of your experience here will be determined by these kinds of friendships,” he said.

As he embarks on his medical journey, Tran credits his professors for their guidance and help while at Whittier. “The professors were the most integral part in my strive towards success,” he said. “They are highly skilled and passionate about their profession to teach and mentor students. I wouldn't be where I am without them.”
