Stephen Zavala '15 drafted by St. Louis Cardinals

Stephen Zavala ’15Poet catcher Stephen Zavala ’15 was selected by the St. Louis Caridinals for the 2015 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. Zavala, the second Poet in as many years to join MLB, was the lone Division III West Region player chosen by a major league team this year.   

This season Zavala collected several accolades including being named 1st Team All-SCIAC, Division III West Region Gold Glove, and Division III National Gold Glove winner.  

He has an impressive performance behind the dish this spring with a 1.000 fielding percentage, allowing just 21 stolen bases and caught a conference high of 12 runners attempting to steal finishing. Out of 208 chances totaled 183 put outs and 25 assists, with no errors. At the plate, he combined for 155 plate appearances with 37 hits, which included five doubles, a triple, and three home runs for a .301 batting average.
